Why I started a blog
Since I started my career in tech, I've always felt there was an absence of an outlet to share what I've learned and document the challenges I face and my steps in overcoming them. Sometimes you just have something you think is interesting or useful and you want to share it somewhere. There have also been times where family or friends have asked for the same advice at different times or just can’t remember the advice the next time around. In these cases, I’ve always wished I had a blog post to send them to that I curated myself in a format I know they can follow.
In more recent years the outlet for me has been my social media accounts but that was more out of convenience than it being the right audience. For example, the majority of my Instagram followers might not have an interest in new technologies or even how to secure their accounts but the ones who truly get value from me sharing the steps of my next Raspberry Pi project will be in the minority. The same can most likely be said for my Twitter audience.
Another void I’ve been meaning to fill is documenting my tech journey. Doing this adds a lot of value for me personally. I know I learn better when I practice what I’ve learned and even more so when I’ve documented it. A detailed blog post practicing what I’ve learnt will help that solidify in my brain for later use. Lastly, sometimes I just have useful knowledge or informative opinions that I want to host somewhere so others don’t have to spend the mental energy figuring it out themselves.
I find it rewarding that, for example, a doctor could reference my work on why phishing awareness training is important or what technology they should use for file storage and understand it in 10 minutes rather than spending two hours researching the topic online when they have patients to take care of.
The goal of the blog is to provide valuable information in minutes. This may change over time, there may even be some interesting opinions published that may not provide any more value other than insight or amusement. The point is I’ll be managing my own corner of the internet that hosts my work and will challenge me for years to come.
